The Pressure of Pittsburgh

I think one of my absolute favorite things to do in the world is travel.  I don’t care how I go.  Plane, train, automobile, rickshaw, boat, bike, whatever…it doesn’t matter to me.  I love just the notion of forging my way into a new and personally unexplored area of the world.  Some of the places I have traveled to through Europe, Africa, and the United States are just magical and literally give you goose bumps as you travel through and in them.  However, some of the places I have traveled to makes me wish that I hadn’t even endeavoured to go there.  I imagine my trip to Pittsburgh this weekend will be somewhere in between.

Now I know that I may be offending many of my Pennsylvanian friends (I went to college in Pennsylvania for 4 years) but the notion of going to Pittsburgh, while undoubtedly fun and an assured cultural experience, just doesn’t give me goosebumps.  If I knew more about the city I am sure that i would be more excited and I know that once I go there I will probably fall in love with it but it just doesn’t thrill me like so many of the other places that I have been have.  As a consequence, I am hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.

The reason for my jaunt to the Steel City is because of a wedding.  One of my good friend’s from college is getting married and one of my best friend’s is a bridesmaid.  The last wedding I attended was when I was 12 and my grandmother was getting married.  The entire ceremony had 10 people or something (including myself) and I was obviously underage and could not enjoy it like the adults could.  There was no real party and no real music that I remember.  I am sure it meant a lot to my grandmother but that is the only wedding that I can recall ever going to and it left me with a really bad taste in my mouth.  I suspect that the wedding this weekend will transform my opinions on them and I expect it to be a riotous time with a number of my friend’s from those good old college days and I will get to see at least a bit of what Pittsburgh is about – or at least enough to form an opinion.

Even though I sound down on Pittsburgh – or just Pennsylvania in general – I am secretly hoping that I will have a little time to explore Pittsburgh and see what it has to offer.  I have heard that some of it is actually quite pretty and quite fun.  To be honest, I would love to leave with a great impression of the city and I sincerely hope that I get to go to the right places and see the right things.  I will be arriving back on Sunday afternoon so you can count on a post about the adventures experienced over the weekend with old friends in a new city.  I’m just hoping that I will have better things to say about Pittsburgh than I have about many of the other places I have been to in Pennsylvania.

  1. I hope your highs in Pittsburgh is as high as mine were in Philly, but I hope your lows are nowhere near as low. Godspeed.
